The Hayes Learning Commons will be hosting our 2nd annual Read-A-Thon! Look for more information to come home after spring break! We had great success last year raising over $5000! Let's make this year even better! Money earned at this year's Read-A-Ton will go to create a Makerspace in the Learning commons! There are also a few surprises in store for those students who participate!
Guest ReadersIf you are interested in being a guest reader on Friday March 2, in celebration of Read Across America, please see the flyer in your child's Friday Folder (sent home 2/8/18). Fill out the bottom of the sheet and send it back to school. We will be contacting you about when and where you will be reading! Thanks!
Dress Up daysWe will also be hosting daily dress up day in celebration of Read-Across America. Dress up days will begin Monday 2/26. Each day students will be asked to show their support for reading by participating in the theme for the day! Cobb County School District and the Cobb County Public Library System have teamed up to give students access to all of CCPLS awesome resources! The new library PASS program allows students to login to the CCPLS resources using their student ID and birth date (MMDD). For more information, please see the attached Flyer!
Come take a ride on the Polar Express!
Beginning Friday, December 8th, students will be taking a ride on the Polar Express. This will take place during their Learning Commons time. The conductors (Mrs. Justice and Mrs. Spencer) will be reading the book, by Chris Van Allsburg, using an interactive Power Point. Students will be served hot chocolate as they make their way to the North Pole. One student from each group will be given the First Gift of Christmas (a bell). This is a favorite activity for students and staff! It was exciting to broadcast live this morning with our brand new news equipment! Thanks to our successful Read-A-Thon last spring we were able to purchase new broadcasting equipment for our HNN News Room! Thank you to everyone who participated in the Read-A-Thon last year and made this possible. We cannot wait to see what this Springs Read-A-Ton will bring!
The first monthly mystery books have been posted to our social media pages. Please be sure to follow us for all the happening of the Hayes Learning Commons!
The Hayes Learning commons will be hosting the Mystery Book of the Month again this year. Beginning October 5th, each Thursday a clue to our mystery books will be posted on our social network pages (Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter) Students will have the opportunity to guess what they think the title of the mystery book is for a chance to Win a copy of the book. Students can guess as many times as they would like. This year we will feature 2 books each month. One book will be for K-2 and the other for 3-5. **Be sure to follow us on social media for your chance to win a copy of the Mystery Book!**
The Hayes Learning Commons is embarking on the journey of self-checkout this year. We are hoping to empower our students to take ownership of their library books and due dates by allowing them to check out their own books.
Students have been trained on the "How to" of the self-checkout system and have begun to practice what they have learned! So far they are LOVING it! We are hoping this encourage students to be proactive in knowing their due dates and help cut down on the number of lost and overdue books! This also frees up Mrs. justice and Mrs. Spencer to help with book selection! |
